The Types of 5-axis Machining Center

The vertical 5-axis machining center is the most widely used machining center for CNC machining service. It is developed from a basic vertical 3-axis machining center. It has 3 straight line axes and 2 rotating coordinate axes. Vertical 5-axis machining center has 3 types according to the position of the 2 rotation axis: 1-two rotating axes on worktable; 2-two rotating axes on spindle; 3-one on worktable and another on spindle.

1-The two rotation axis on worktable

A rotating shaft rotates around the X axis, which we define as the A axis.The working range of A axis is usually between +30 to -120 degrees.

C rotating shaft rotates around the Z axis,which we define as the C axis.The working range of A axis is usually between 0 to 360 degrees.

The vertical 5-axis machining center can process other faces besides the mounting surface through the combination of the A-axis and the C-axis. The minimum division value of the A-axis and the C-axis is 0.001 degrees, there is no dead angle on the machined surface of the workpiece. (Including drilling diagonal bore and finishing inclined plane)

2-two rotating axes on spindle

The front of spindle is equipped with a turning head which revolves around the Z axis.We define it as the C axis which working range is 360 degrees.

On the swiveling head, a rotation axis is installed which revolves around the X axis. We define it as the A axis which working range is -90 to +90 degrees.

The advantage of this type of rotary axis setting is that the spindle is very flexible. The worktable can process very large workpieces, such as aircraft fuselage, huge turbine engine casing and other large complex surface-like workpieces.

3-one Rotating shaft on worktable and another on spindle.

There is a turning head on the front of the spindle, which revolves around the X axis. We define it as A axis which working range is -90 to +90 degrees. Another rotating shaft is mounted on the table which revolves around the Z axis.We define it as C axis, and the working range is 360 degrees.

The advantage of this rotary shaft setting is that the worktable and spindle are equipped with linkage machining, which is very flexible and can process complex type workpieces.

    Thanks for helping me learn more about 5-axis Machining centers. I didn’t know that the rotary axis can make the spindle flexible process large workpieces. I’m interested to learn if you should always measure your workpiece in case it affects what settings to use.
