Heat treatment of motor shaft parts

(1) Quenching and tempering

45 steel is a medium carbon structural steel with fine cold and hot properties, good mechanical properties, low cost. Its bad point is that the hardenability is low, is not suitable for workpieces with big section size and high requirements .

Because of #45 steel low hardenability, 10% brine solution which has high cooling rate is recommended. After entering the water, the workpiece should be hardened, but not cold. If the workpiece is cooled in brine,the workpiece may be cracked. Because when the workpiece is cooled to 180 degrees, the rapid transformation of austenite into martensite causes excessive structural stress. Therefore, when the quenched workpiece is cooled to the temperature range, it should adopt slow cooling mode.

The water temperature is difficult to control, it must be operated by rich experience. When the shaking of the workpiece in the water stops, it can be air-cooled or oil-cooled better. In addition, the workpiece should not be static in water, should do regular movement in accordance with the geometry of the workpiece.Static cooling and stationary workpiece will cause uneven hardness and uneven stress, resulting in large deformation and even cracking.

(2) Surface hardening and low temperature tempering.

Surface quenching is a heat treatment process which only quenches the surface layer of the workpiece to change its structure and properties. It is realized by combining rapid heating and immediate quenching + cooling. That is to say, the surface of the workpiece is rapidly heated to quenching temperature by rapid heating, and then rapidly cooled when the unequal heat is fully transferred to the center. The surface layer turns to martensite by hardening , while the core is still in the unquenched state, i.e. annealed, normalized or tempered structure with good plasticity and toughness.

(3) Artificial aging at low temperature

The parts are heated to 120 ~ 150 degrees for stress release and annealing, and then taken out for cooling in air after a long time of heat preservation (5 – 12 hours). The purpose is to reduce the micro-stress and residual stress in the quenched axle parts, preventing deformation and cracking. Low temperature artificial aging is simple and cost efficient. Compared with natural aging, more time will be saved, residual stress removal is more thorough.
